About CEES
CEES is organized as a partnership between the School of Earth Sciences (SES),
and affiliates from the Stanford Computer Systems Laboratory (CSL), government agencies, and private industry. Moreover, CEES builds on the long history of collaboration between Stanford University and the computer technology companies of Silicon Valley, and is poised to take advantage of a shared environment of excellence and innovation in both Earth science and computer science.
Computer-driven science and
Science-driven computer design
The Earth sciences are rich in computational research and applications. To this richness, CEES brings a unique partnership between the Earth sciences community and the computer sciences community, each driving development of the other. The goal is to expand capacity for new interdisciplinary Earth science research, while enabling more discipline specific research where activities exist already. A complementary goal is to engage computer architects to design hardware and software systems that are better suited to Earth and environmental science problems.
CEES is organized into three thematic units - Research, HPTC, and Education - which together will work on filling the growing gap between mathematics and the sciences and engineering by combining a strong focus on scientific applications with state-of-the-art computational methods.
CEES is also hosting SmartFields, a multi-disciplinary research consortium with Stanford participants from the departments of Petroleum Engineering, Geophysics, and Management Sciences and Engineering.
