Research

CEES hosts both single PI and collaborative research activities, bringing together scientists and students under an umbrella of intellectual collaboration with shared computational resources. Faculty members, many of whom already have research projects with large computational components, can become affiliated with the center. These faculty affiliates will bring students, post-docs, and visitors who also have computational interests and will benefit from access to the center’s hardware and staff support, as well the opportunity for collaboration with professional colleagues with similar research interests and problems.

The computational research at CEES utilizes state-of-the-art hardware and modern computational methods to address complex earth science problems, e.g., multi-scale spatial and temporal complexity, coupled nonlinear multi-physics, and massive data analyses. Our near-term goal is to fully exploit modern and evolving multi-thread architectures for earth science applications. Our long-term goal is to engage computer architects to design systems that are better suited to scientific applications.

Ongoing research in SES includes the following:

  • Earthquake Seismology
  • Hydrology
  • Crustal Deformation
  • Seismic Imaging
  • Seismic modeling
  • Urban Growth
  • Bio-Oceanography
  • Rock Physics
  • Reservoir simulation
  • Stochastic Modeling
  • InSAR radar remote sensing
  • Basin Modeling
  • Optimization of Petroleum Systems
